    A Conceptual Framework for B2B Electronic Contracting

    Electronic contracting aims at improving existing business relationship paradigms and at enabling new forms of contractual relationships. To successfully realize these objectives, an integral understanding of the contracting field must be established. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for business-to-business contracting support. The framework provides a complete view over the contracting field. It allows positioning research efforts in the domain, analysing them, placing their goals into perspective, and overseeing future research topics and issues. It is the basis for drawing conclusions about basic requirements to contracting systems

    CrossFlow: Integrating Workflow Management and Electronic Commerce

    The CrossFlow1 architecture provides support for cross-organisational workflow management in dynamically established virtual enterprises. The creation of a business relationship between a service provider organisation performing a service on behalf of a consumer organisation can be made dynamic when augmented by virtual market technology, the dynamic configuration of the contract enactment infrastructures, and the provision of fine grained service monitoring and control. Standard ways of describing services and contracts can be combined with matchmaking technology to create a virtual market for such service provision and consumption. A provider can then advertise its services in the market and consumers can search for a compatible business partner. This provides choice in selecting a partner and allows the deferment of the decision to a point in time where it can be made on the most up-to-date requirements of the consumer and service offers in the market. The penalty for deferred decision making is the time to set up the infrastructure in each organisation for the dynamically established contract. Thus, a further aspect of CrossFlow was to exploit the contract in the dynamic and automatic configuration of the contract enactment and supervision infrastructures of the respective organisations and in linking them in a dynamic fashion. The electronic contract, which results from the agreement between the newly established business partners, completely specifies the intended collaboration between them. Given the importance of the business process enacted by the provider, this includes fine-grained monitoring and control to allow tight co-operation between the organisations

    The rapid development of IT gives rise to changes in many industries and different spheres of life. It simplifies and speeds up processes and data processing. As a result, it changes the processes and the data involved in them. The area of commerce and contracting in particular undergoes similar changes. The new developments aim at speeding up, facilitating and globalizing the process of contracting. This inevitably leads to new contracting processes and changes the standard approach for contracting. This report presents a survey of the research, development, and standardization efforts in the area of business-to-business e-contracting. The report is divided into three parts. The first part presents a multi-dimensional contracting framework. The second part reviews current standardization processes and developments in the e-commerce field. The third part provides summaries and comments on a selected set of papers on e-contracting. Depending on their goals, focus and content, the papers are categorized in accordance with the contract cycle phases described in one of the dimensions of the contracting framework. Where appropriate, the content of the papers is related to the dimensions of the contracting framework. This report further provides an acronym list of the most common abbreviations in e-commerce terminology

    Contracts for Cross-Organizational Workflow Management

    Nowadays, many organizations form dynamic partnerships to deal effectively with market requirements. As companies use automated workflow systems to control their processes, a way of linking workflow processes in different organizations is useful in turning the co-operating companies into a seamless operating virtual enterprise. The CrossFlow Esprit project aims at developing information technology for advanced process support in dynamic virtual organizations with contract based service trading. Contracts are necessary for flexible service outsourcing. This report presents contracts as a way of finding suitable partners, connect WFMSs of different kinds, control outsourced workflow, and share an abstraction of the workflow specification between the partners. The contract defines the data, process, and conditions relevant to the co-operation and the outsourced workflow on an abstract level. This information can be fed through an interface to the WFMSs on both sides of the outsourcing in order to automate fully the co-operation between the partners

    A Reference Architecture for Electronic Business-to-Business Collaboration Setup and Enactment Systems

    The question what a business-to-business (B2B) collaboration setup and enactment application-system should look like remains open. An important element of such collaboration constitutes the inter-organizational disclosure of business-process details so that the opposing parties may protect their business secrets. For that purpose, eSourcing [37] has been developed as a general businessprocess collaboration concept in the framework of the EU research project Cross- Work. The eSourcing characteristics are guiding for the design and evaluation of an eSourcing Reference Architecture (eSRA) that serves as a starting point for software developers of B2B-collaboration systems. In this paper we present the results of a scenario-based evaluation method conducted with the earlier specified eSourcing Architecture (eSA) that generates as results risks, sensitivity, and tradeoff points that must be paid attention to if eSA is implemented. Additionally, the evaluation method detects shortcomings of eSA in terms of integrated components that are required for electronic B2B-collaboration. The evaluation results are used for the specification of eSRA, which comprises all extensions for incorporating the results of the scenario-based evaluation, on three refinement levels.Peer reviewe

While the positive effects of business process standardization are well-described, it is often undesirable to fully unify different variants due to cultural, legal, or operational reasons. Consequently, a decision has to be made about the extent to which a family of business processes should be standardized. However, little is known about the factors that drive that decision. This paper fills that gap, by presenting factors that drive the extent to which business processes can be standardized, performance properties that are influenced by business process standardization, and relations between these concepts
